Lake Union Cleanup Set for July 5
Starbucks, the Puget Soundkeeper Alliance, and CleanScapes are teaming up to manage the third annual cleanup of Seattle's freshwater lake.
The third annual 5th of July Lake Union Cleanup will involve hundreds of volunteers who collect trash on and around the freshwater lake in Seattle, with the twin goals of beautification and recycling.
Starbucks, the Puget Soundkeeper Alliance, and CleanScapes are managing the event; more than 1,500 volunteers collected 2.8 tons of garbage during the first two. "At Starbucks, we believe in being good neighbors and we're always ready to roll up our sleeves," said Clarice Turner, senior vice president, US Business, for the company's North Division. "The Family 4th at Lake Union fireworks show has become a cherished local event that unites the community, and we hope to inspire our friends and neighbors to join us in service on the 5th of July."
CleanScapes will manage the collected garbage, compostables, and recycling. The Puget Soundkeeper Alliance will coordinate removal of lake debris via kayaks, as the organization has since 1996, according to Starbucks.
The cleanup will take place from 10 a.m. to noon, with volunteer check-in beginning at 9 a.m. at the Center for Wooden Boats or Gas Works Park. Volunteers are encouraged to pre-register here.
