New World Record: Stop, Drop, and Roll

This State Farm video was shot in Des Moines, Iowa, on Aug. 21, 2011, during the Iowa State Fair. It shows more than 1,500 people participating in a simultaneous stop, drop, and roll practice session on cardboard spread out on the fair's Grand Concourse. State Farm reports this broke the prior record, 602 participants, which was set in 2003 by the Bedford, Indiana Fire Department. Iowa State Fire Marshal Ray Reynolds hatched the idea in celebration of the State Fire Marshal Division's 100th anniversary, as a way to promote fire safety. "I thought, I'm going to do something that requires everybody to get involved," Reynolds said. "You're never too old to Stop, Drop, and Roll."

Volvo Trucks: Volvo FE Hybrid crash-tested

Before Volvo Trucks releases a new model onto the market, the vehicle always undergoes a rigorous crash-test program. The Volvo FE Hybrid is no exception. With its 578 kg battery pack, it presents the crash-test engineers with new challenges. The Volvo FE Hybrid is propelled in parallel by an electric motor and a diesel engine, making possible fuel savings of up to 30 percent. The hybrid model, which will primarily perform distribution and refuse collection duties in urban areas, was tested by simulating a collision in which a car hits the side of the battery pack at a speed of 46 kilometers an hour.

The DARPA Autonomous Robotic Manipulation Program

The DARPA Autonomous Robotic Manipulation (ARM) program is developing software that enables robots, given only high-level direction, to autonomously grasp, manipulate and perform complex tasks in unstructured environments. At the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, an ARM robot known as "Robbie" has been playing games with curious and intrigued visitors. The exhibit teaches visitors about how robotics can impact society and encourages young people to pursue careers in science and engineering. DARPA is also offering the public the opportunity to develop and test code to perform tasks in the robot simulator, then upload that code to an actual robot and watch it execute the task in real time via the web.
