Move It! Rig Move Safety for Roughnecks

This NIOSH February 2012 video targets one of the most dangerous activities in the oil & gas extraction industry: the drilling rig move. Such a move includes all of the activities involved in disconnecting and disassembling an oil and gas drilling rig and its components, loading all of the equipment onto trucks, transporting the equipment to the next well site, and reassembling and reconnecting the rig and its components. During a rig move, there are dozens of workers and vehicles at the well site, resulting in what is referred to as "controlled chaos." This video features workers identifying the major hazards encountered during a rig move and describing ways to avoid them. The use of workers speaking in their own words makes this product compelling to oil and gas extraction workers. NIOSH did not use a script or solicit specific responses from the workers; all of the workers' comments are their own. Three companies provided access to their work sites and workers for the development of the video. NIOSH distributed nearly 1,500 copies of the video within six weeks of its release. The International Association of Drilling Contractors also agreed to market the video to its members, on its website, and at national meetings and conferences.

Ginny, Alpha's Mine Rescue Dog

Alpha Natural Resources says Ginny, a Dutch Shepherd, is the first dog specially trained for underground and surface mine rescue. The company created Facebook and Twitter pages for her and features her in a YouTube video. "We are excited to welcome Ginny to the Alpha Natural Resources family. She is a tremendous new asset for mine search and rescue, both for our company and the industry, and is part of our larger commitment to safety,” said Kevin Crutchfield, chairman and CEO of Alpha. “Ginny also demonstrates our Running Right process in action, showing how our company takes employee ideas to enhance safety and makes them a reality." Ginny, a brindle-colored Dutch Shepherd, is trained to search for missing, trapped, injured, or unresponsive humans in unstable conditions or confined areas. She has a highly-developed scent ability and can canvass large areas in short amounts of time. To help protect and support her when working in the field, Ginny also wears a specially designed protective vest that carries sophisticated technology, such as an infrared camera and atmospheric gas detector, when underground. She was bred at a kennel that provides some of the highest-performing dogs in existence to branches of the U.S. military, law enforcement, and homeland security. Her formal training took more than two years and was led by Bill Dotson, a recognized canine behaviorist with expertise in the development of highly specialized skills for search, rescue, and recovery. Ginny continues to train with Alpha's mine search and rescue teams so that they know how to best work with her and leverage her skills. Ginny currently resides with her handler, Rick McAllister, Alpha's director of Continuous Improvement. He came up with the idea the company should train a dog specifically for mine search and rescue. For the past century, Fluor has brought its unparalleled safety culture to all corners of the globe. It is a value so deeply entrenched that most employees say they cannot separate safety mindfulness from their working hours and their time at home. In literally every Fluor office and within every Fluor project, all meetings of any kind begin with a relevant safety briefing. 451° Burn Video

This Bulwark® Protective Apparel video made its debut June 4, 2012, at ASSE's Safety 2012 conference in Denver. It shows 3D paper sculpture artist Jeff Nishinaka painstakingly building an industrial model -– he worked on it for months -– before the sculpture is burned. The concluding message, "Because people aren't fireproof," is meant to communicate the vulnerability to fire of workers in hazardous environments, such as those in the oil and gas industry, utility workers, and commercial electricians. "Our customers are engaged in serious, sometimes dangerous work," said Stan Jewell, Bulwark's general manager. "We want them to know that we understand the risks inherent in their work and that Bulwark is committed to developing innovative products and services that increase safety and reduce risk." Bulwark worked with its advertising agency, Fitzgerald+CO, and live-action production company SuperFad to create the video.
